Back, and Index
Been offline for five, very long days. Something in my 4G wireless modem was getting very unhappy and would not stay connected to the network for increasing periods during the week previous, and it finally got intolerable Friday morning. Far too many wasted minutes with Clear(wire)'s scripted to the point of being unhelpful technical support eventually got them to determine that it wasn't their tower (but I had to call in again to find that out).
At one point the modem wouldn't stay online for more than two minutes, and sometimes would take hours before it might even see the tower again. Then, after I finally broke down and ordered a new modem it connected again for nine hours, but since they'd deactivated it, that was pointless, I thought I'd been had somehow. But then it pretty much died for good.
The new modem arrived today, and seems to be in good working order, plus it has a built-in Wi-Fi hub, which is good because the one I bought to connect my Kindle and Etna to the network was getting a little flaky.
But, time away from the network allowed (forced) me to deal with content already on my computer, and so I watched Index, finally.
The short form: It was okay. The hero seemed to lose his memory a lot, but at least remembered how to speak the language, fortunately. It ended very unsatisfyingly, as if there were another season that didn't come (Ah, I see there is an Index II series out there). The arcs didn't seem connected very well, and Index was often ignored when she wasn't the McGuffin. It also seemed to assume you knew some of the characters already.
I did rather like the final villainess, Sherry Cromwell. She rather fit the ideal that villains don't really think of themselves as the bad guy - running around twirling their mustaches and giggling about how evil they are. She had a reasonable motive, to prevent another disaster like the one that killed her friend by disrupting the apparent growing alliance between Science and Magic. The fact that she had dark skin, blonde hair, Gothic style, and a slender, corseted waist under her very nice rack, only added to the appeal. (Ah, Goth without the Loli!), but they did so little with her, Raise Golem (of her dead friend!) have it smashed, rinse, repeat. And once defeated, they just left her there, what happened to her was completely unresolved.

Wow. I can see how this came from the guy who brought us Magical Trevor... but man. These are wild to watch.

I first heard of Weebl way, WAY back when he did that Kenya flash thing, that spawned a whole bunch of animated LiveJournal Icons.... Never really thought to go back until a friend who had never heard if it found it and tweeted it. I went and looked, and then jumped to the latest videos, and this was the second most recent, and I think the best from the band.
What I like best is the verse after the explosion, especially in light of the reveal at the end.
Of course, hot chicks in catsuits is always a plus.
The one thing that drives me nuts is the continuity in the jetboard sequence, where they keep switching positions.

In case anyone was wondering what I do, which I may have alluded to in the past, go here and look at the second picture. That's my job, sticking that bad boy on and attaching the whole back end.
Unfortunately, I'm doing it today AND tomorrow, which is putting me a little behind in my attempts get going again with my latest review. Overtime is nice, but free time is better.

And *sigh* I've just spent the last two days ruining that paint job (on the left side) and had to trash a $1040 part all in the pursuit of a single bad Nutplate, and it ain't over yet.
And next weekend, looks like Saturday AND Sunday are mandatory.

Ouch. I feel for you. I worked IT around the Bell Helicopter guys for eight years. The scale may be smaller, but it still hurt when a big part was messed up because of a small plate or attachment not fitting properly.

Yeah, I've been digging into the side of this plane for a couple days now, and just got the panel off today (And this is the side of the fin DESIGNED to be maintained, the other side is worse) I fixed the nutplate (which was stripped) and wisely decided to install the fastener that goes into it before we started to button it all up. Good move, because the specified fastener wasn't right. Now we know how it got stripped. But I might have found a few more issues in the process....
I'm looking at blowing an entire week of my time on one screw. This is not typical, mind you, but I do seem to get a lot of troubleshooting jobs.
And being the first of a new model, with a lot more changes than just the extra 20 feet of fuselage, it's a target rich environment. As my Dad says, "The first pancakes are to clean the griddle."
It's funny, the newer planes are going almost directly from the factory to the customers, but back in the EMC (Everett Modification Center), where I had to do a little work during a slack time (Outside, in the cold and rain, scraping out aeroseal for a week and a half), I saw they still had the first airplane I'd ever laid hands on two and a half years earlier.

Actually, to me the scariest thing was seeing "In partnership with Alenia Aeromacci" They built the H-Stab for the -8, and we had to beat them up a LOT to finally get decent work out of them. The -9 H-stab is completely different and IIRC from a different vendor.
Let's just say that when you get parts from a company in a culture that has two hour lunch breaks including alcohol, your QA inspectors need to bring their A-Game.

I would take a ride at SSJ over 787 any day, considering that no fault of the airplane was involved into Mt. Salak. A modest amount of piloting discipline is all that required there, while no amount of discipline or skill is going to save you when a fire breaks out onboard due to misdesigned electrical system.

The new battery box is pretty much bomb-proof. (I've seen pictures of one they simulated an explosion in) but the other modifications will make that impossible anyway. As for the test aircraft, that was fixed too (That's what test aircraft are for, of course, it's hard to plan for what misplaced drill shavings will do.)
There's stuff I've seen and can't really talk about, but the 787 includes some really amazing technology. Some is just for comfort, like automatic gust compensation, but there's safety stuff in there that would make all the difference. (Lose an engine, the system compensates for the change in handling.) There's the usual stuff like redundant hydraulic systems that I can say are NOT routed through the same points like in some aircraft. But none of this stuff overrides the pilot's authority.
There are even bolts with computer chips in them that can monitor how tight they are.
Anyway, I'd gladly fly in a 787, even knowing how the sausages are made, especially since the nearest opportunity runs Seattle to Tokyo....

Just got done watching 'Legends of Flight: IMAX' and found it really interesting. The HUD in the cockpit was the biggest feature (aside from the wing design) that I found the most interesting about the 787.
I did find it interesting that the video made it sound like using carbon fiber was something brand new in aviation. After being at a major helicopter company in the IT division for many years, I saw them using layered carbon fiber in multiple helicopters. (Yes, I'm being a little vague, because I don't know, even after nine years, how much I'm allowed to discuss.)

I know they've been using Carbon Fiber to make V-22 Ospreys for 20+ years now. But it is the first airliner to go with a complete tube.
Airbus' approach to CFRP is to make panels out of it and still attach them with regular fasteners. Bad because you lose the weight and cost savings of deleting all those fasteners, and you lose the strength that comes from not having seams.
Word going around about that Ethiopian jet that got burned by the Honeywell ELT is that it's actually going to be scrapped. Just too expensive to repair. That would make it the first casualty in the line. *frown* Hell, if they could get it here, we could stick a whole new 47/48 section on it, but that's not in the cards.

h/t The Brickmuppet for the last one. First one seen on Himawari.
Looked good, although even the 480p was really pixelated in the action
scenes. I think though, the first ones were better, lacking dialogue.

I'm glad to see that his Dead Fantasy experience is working well in developing something completely new.
I don't know why, but when I watch White's video, once she casts a speed spell on her feet, her leg flying out with some of the thrusts is a little disconcerting. Too much time spent fencing in at college I guess...

"Red" spoke, cause I'd imagined her being some sort of latina given her jet black hair and her BGM. Hell, the guy's in Texas, so when I saw "Yellow" I was actually expecting a Texas drawl until I realized that this is a team of fighting hipster chicks.
Still, these are really cool. Is he using MMD wiith some tweaks or is it his own program?

According to the comments, the voices in Yellow are two of the "Stars" on Roosterteeth, WETF that is, some variant on G4 TV I guess.
Monty's been doing this for a while. He's mostly famous for "Dead Fantasy", something he put together long before MMD came out, where he had the Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive girls just fighting. He kept adding chapters and more fighters until it got infected with a plot.

Joy!
Himawari has been making me very happy. Playing a time consuming game with all the graphic features ON instead of off... And best of all, I re-discovered that a while ago I had downloaded the Tenchi Muyo OVA series in 1080p a long time ago, but I could never watch it because the opening sequence, with that flashing pattern, was pretty much instant death for any codec on Dystopia. For Himawari, she wasn't even breathing hard, and I got to remember why, for the first six episodes anyway, why it was one of my favorite series.
I was in love with Ryoko, at first. She was like Lum, with an edge. and I particularly liked the history she had with Tenchi before he was even aware of her - that was a sweet backstory. Of course, after the big storyline in the first six episodes, they fell back on fairly standard Harem tripe, and that dimmed my enthusiasm, but still, I haven't seen it since I was eagerly buying it up on VHS. And I've always loved that opening theme.

"Himawari has been making me very happy. Playing a time consuming game with all the graphic features ON instead of off" made me think you meant playing a game named Himawari. Completely forgot about that hostname thing.

I can't help but smile when I see Hiawari's name. The way she would run in the intro to Vivdred Operation was so absurd...
And Tenchi Muyo was the second anime I ever watched... the first being Bubblegum Crisis. A friend had it on Laserdisc and showed them to me. I later bought the OVAs on Laserdisc, despite not having a player. I think they're still out in the garage.

The only other place I've seen that goofy, arms-down run is Hank Venture in the opening of "The Venture Brothers."
Tenchi Muyo still holds up, at least the first 6. But I can't sit through the embarrassment of Episode 7 and Ryoko trying to pick up on Tenchi with something she learned from a girls manga Sasami gave her.
The TV series wasn't as strong, and really diluted Ryoko's connection to Tenchi. And Tenchi in Tokyo was bought through force of habit.
I think that level of investment entitled me to the torrent of GXP I just pulled down, although halfway through episode 1, there's no trace of the original cast but an empty house.

I watched some kind of continuation for OVA (not TV continuity) with a pile-up of sisters. It was pretty lulzy with all the justification, and also
they trotted out 1 new harem member suddenly, who put every other one to shame and showed Ryoko and Ayeka what a real woman is like. But it also reminded that the OVA was running out of steam after the 6 episodes.

Maybe Tenchi in Tokyo? He goes off to college and meets a nice Earth girl, and Washuu constructs a hyperspace tunnel from the house to his bed, IIRC, and they all pester the crap out of him. Might have involved some extra-dimensional loli girl screwing with things too.
GXP so far sucks. Ryoko made a brief cameo in the first episode, but the whole show focuses on a new boy with absurdly phenomenal bad luck who somehow gets inducted into the Galaxy Police aboard a Transport ship. He is irritating the way he just smiles through shit happening to him.
It's almost like a fan-fic someone set in the Tenchi universe where they had to avoid using the original cast. A BAD fan-fic.

GXP is an entirely independent storyline that has nothing to do with Tenchi but the name and a lot of secondary characters. (The originals show up for one episode.) Nabeshin did the series, and he did an outstanding job of it -- even if he did give the creators some continuity headaches. IMHO, it's actually better than TM itself, because it was done as a single series, all at once, and hangs together very well.
It's certainly better than that execrable OVA series about Tenchi's half-brother.
12
I thought it was pretty awful. Although I did like the character designs for Elma and Ryoko. It strained credibility for them to back-continuity have Ryoko BE Elma. And doubling the size of the harem in the last episode was the crowning moment of stupid writing.
I guess what I'd like to see in a Harem is one where the center of it all is an ACTIVE element, rather than a beach ball being batted around by all these girls with inexplicable devotion to him.
Posted by: Mauser at July 11, 2013 12:01 PM (cZPoz)
Try the center tag.
{center} {/center} but with "[" in place of "{"
This works even "below the fold" or in comments where the 'justify right, left, center' field is not present.
Like this:
[center]
Be advised that it sometimes doesn't work inside other tags though and Pixy says that if ones blog has become infested with iceweasles that they can mess anything up.

It's odd, I remember hitting this problem once before in one of my reviews, and I remember a workaround, and I remember it working, and I even remember Pixy commenting on it. But for the life of me, I can't remember any useful DETAILS.
That's the thing, I used the center tags provided by the editor. They should work, but they're not.
OH, and the new computers are quite happy. Getting sharing to work how I wanted between Etna and Himawari hasn't been entirely smooth. And now my Kindle won't connect to my Wireless hub.
Posted by: Mauser at June 18, 2013 12:55 PM (cZPoz)
They used to say, with regard to Moore's Law, that a top of the line computer would typically cost around $4000, and that with each doubling of the power of computers, the top of the line computer would still cost around $4000.
Well, I think they did hit some limit based on the scale they can make IC traces, so now the prices are coming down. WAY down. For $1030 before tax ($1128 after) I think I got an amazing deal. I probably could have spent more on higher end video card, but even this one is an order of magnitude faster than my old one. (Wish I'd had access to this video card rating site someone showed me afterwards, for a little more the next variant of my new card is significantly better, I suppose I could return it and trade up, but it's 45 minutes each way.). In any case, while I suppose there were a couple of small areas where I could have been a little more top end, I'm well up there, and I was able to get a much better computer, and hopefully solve all my problems.
Alas, that remains to be seen. Some of my computer issues are yet to be resolved.
So today's foray to Fry's to build a machine from the ground up resulted in me bringing home:
An 8 core, 4 GHz, Socket AM3+ AMD processor (an unlocked version that my MB can supposedly automatically figure out how far it can overclock and even possibly free up any unused cores),
An MSI motherboard that could support it (and a few features I wanted that distinguished it from the others, like optical digital audio out that connects directly to my Amp.),
16 Gig of memory (1600 speed, could have been faster, but at $99 for the pair, a great deal),
A 750 Watt Corsair power supply with modular cabling,
A very nice "Soprano" case,
Another 2 TB drive - which turned out to be a wise investment, although it would have been better if they hadn't been sold out of the Seagate Barracuda that was cheaper and the same model as the one I've got. This one's a Hitachi.
A new Asus nVidia GTX 650 video card, and
A SATA DVD/CD drive.
And on the way out I remembered to snag an HDMI cable, since my old video card did 1080P via component video. Alas, the days of taking advantage of the component video switching in my Amp will have to change, and I'll have to use the TV remote to switch between the computer and the video gear, and switch the amp for the audio.
Not one item on the list was over $200. Most were under $150, and the DVD drive blew the curve by being $12. The HDMI cable, which I picked up on the way out (fortunately) was a very reasonable $8 for a 6 footer, half what they used to cost.
There were also about $40 worth or rebates among those components. And the laptop has one too I need to send in for.
So I carefully began the process of building the machine, routing the wires though the rubber grommets in the frame of the case, installing drives in the slide out trays (This case even has a space in the top where you can basically jam in any bare SATA drive into this socket for hot swapping backups.) Once everything was in, and the TV was switched to HDMI, I crossed my fingers and fired it up. It worked!
The world of BIOS has improved to the point where you can use the mouse with it. Alas, while booting up with my original drive, I got about the farthest I was able to before the old machine really began dying. The mouse would freeze during the post-desktop loading process, right about the time the SysConfig dialog would come up. Plus Windows wanted to re-validate, but couldn't connect to the internet for some reason. Safe Mode launches would lock up (Probably missing some critical files for the new config). Fortunately, I got that second drive. As I write, it's in the process of formatting, and I'm going to install an OS on it. Then we shall see if I can successfully copy all my important stuff off it before trying to fix my original drive's OS.
Why not stick with the OS on the new drive? It's a slower RPM, and there's so much stuff to re-install and re-update. The new drive is meant for backups. (Also, the CD that came with the new drive seems to be less bootable than they indicated, so my XP Pro disk is doing the formatting. It's taking a while to format the raw drive.)
I'll keep you fascinated people updated.
Update 1: I guess I really do need Windows 7 or better. XP can only access 3 Gig of memory. But I still don't want 8.
Update 2: Amazon told me that Win 7 wouldn't arrive until Wednesday, so I didn't check my mail until now (3 AM Sunday) but it arrived Saturday at Noon. It's going to take some messing around to get my drives right. One can't change the drive letter of the boot volume, I still want my system on one half of my faster Seagate drive hooked up as drive 0. Fortunately I installed XP on Both drives, so I renamed the Hitachi drive to H: will boot from that and get C and D back to their proper places (instead of E and F.) Wondering about repartitioning, so I'm backing up all the torrents from D. Reorganizing is always such a pain.
But I DID discover that on 4/20/13 they released a new CCCP. Yeee!
Yeah, the memory access being the big thing. And the 64 bit support.
Fortunately, my data seems to be intact. But my attempt to reinstall Windows into my old drive seems to have broken all my apps, including FireFox (#include "Aeee! My bookmarks!.wav). I'm trying to figure out how they were stored. There seems to be a folder of backups, but I don't know how to access it, yet.
I'm also debating the wisdom of doing much to resurrect the XP install while waiting for the Win 7 disks to arrive from Amazon. I mean, I'm dying to see just how much faster this Octoprocessor is, where each one is twice as wide and twice as fast as the original. I may finally start downloading 1080p stuff, or be able to watch the title sequence of the new Lupin without it freezing up.
The whole App-breaking thing is one area where MacOS 8.6 and earlier were vastly superior. Apps loaded into their own folders. Occasionally some cross-platform stuff wanted to put extensions in your system folder, but still, for the most part you could delete, replace, upgrade, downgrade, or even install multiple copies of your OS on your drive and it wouldn't affect your apps.
I also need a good name for this machine. I need a really smart, cute anime girl who is a computer whiz.

Now I just have to straighten out my e-mail situation, and figure out
what ELSE needs to be reinstalled. (The "Free" version of Adobe Creative
Suite took a lot of work to get installed right under 64 bit). I
normally use Eudora 7, but I've heard it has trouble these days. I
installed Thunderbird, but I don't know if I can get it to import all
the old e-mails and address books.

Unfortunately, Dystopia is the name of my main Desktop computer, pretty much my only really useable machine. (I've given up mostly using my vintage 1996 Mac, and I have one other less advanced PC that is scheduled to run the CNC Router I will build eventually). Usable was a fairly charitable description for a Single Core Socket 939 Athalon at 2.4 GHz. But it did have one thing going for it, a 2 TB SATA drive, divided into two partitions (thanks to Seagate's cloning program splitting it to match my previous 200 Gig drive). C: of course was the main one, and D: contained all my torrents.
The graphics card, a BFG-made nVidia 7300 lost its fan a while ago, but kept working. But I got into playing a game that ran the graphics pretty hard, and I got an education. The game would oddly lose its frame rate dramatically, then regain it in a minute or so. The Task Manager would show a huge spike in Kernel times. The in-game debug stats showed that it was that the Open GL calls that were taking an order of magnitude longer, and my handy little Infrared thermometer showed me what was happening to the graphics card. At the start of the game it would begin heating up, and at a certain point, it would go into some kind of thermal shutdown. It still worked, but slowly. Once it cooled (barely) enough, it would start flying again, and overheat again. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. A strategically placed case fan solved the problem, but before I could implement a better plan, it failed permanently, only working in some kind of VGA mode.
So began the desperate struggle to salvage things as other cascading failures followed. CHKDSK started making an appearance in the boot process, never a good sign. Attempts to copy my documents folder to my external USB drive would fail before it got to the important stuff, all my pictures and writing (and apps, and software installers). Hey Microsoft, what ever happened to Abort, Retry, Ignore? Abandoning a copy fifteen folder levels deep because NTUser.dat is in use is a really shitty way to leave a user. Attempts to copy my data into the remaining space on the D: Partition were similarly cursed, even a Power Outage added itself to the mix. By this point, the machine was starting to randomly fail to get through the POST or load the BIOS. I fell back to my previous video card, with significant additional problems related to the end of support for it in the current divers. Eventually I decided I didn't want to risk the C: drive any more, and pulled out my previous 200 Gig IDE drive, which SHOULD have still had a working OS on it. But guess what, it wouldn't boot.
Always Mount a Scratch Monkey they say, Well, the Monkey may well be dead, but it's hard to tell because attempting to reformat the old drive and re-install the OS on it failed with a random freeze, and after that, well, it's just not restarting.
(I even replaced the CMOS battery. No real help there though.)
Well, I finally dug out the crowbar to pry open my wallet. I've always wanted to have a Laptop. Meet Etna. The best HP laptop Office Depot had laying around. It doesn't give me access to my SATA drive yet, but it gets me online, sorta. All my good stuff is still locked away (Including my bookmarks!). And I wasn't joking about the crowbar. My bank called me the day of the purchase to make sure it was really me.
I have gotten my first taste of Windows 8 and it's every bit as vile as you have heard. Thank goodness for the auto-setup it ran when I first powered up because I wouldn't have found some of the network settings manually. Although it was quite annoying in insisting to use my wireless access point instead of the perfectly good network cable plugged into the side. Eventually I had to turn the wireless off entirely. And I'm still not too thrilled about the info it insisted on collecting for a "Microsoft Account". No, I'm not going to your stinking App store. They seem to have added another layer of abstraction to the filesystem too, in order to hide what's under the hood from users. My files seem to save in a directory called "Library" which is not what one would normally call something you write to.
Hopefully this weekend a trip to Fry's will give me the chance to get all the parts for a killer system, one that I will run into the ground for another ten years. And run my copy of XP Pro on for as long as I can.
What should I do next?
Something to ask my reader(s?), since I've left so many open ended things.
1: Go back to Deadman Wonderland.
2: Robotics;Notes needs some love.
3: You never finished adding the pics for the last episode of Mysterious Girlfriend X
4: Nekomonogatari is only four episodes, you should be able to finish that.
5: Michiko to Hatchin has been kicking around in back of my mind.
6: Screw all that old stuff, how about covering something from the new season?

I should post more things to comment about. Unfortunately, I've been working massive, massive overtime, Saturdays and Sundays, 10 hour days, it's been torture. But for once I'm grateful for a Union, because they must give me this coming weekend off.
The paychecks would be awesomer if the government didn't tax overtime extra for some reason.
