Joy!

Himawari has been making me very happy.  Playing a time consuming game with all the graphic features ON instead of off... And best of all, I re-discovered that a while ago I had downloaded the Tenchi Muyo OVA series in 1080p a long time ago, but I could never watch it because the opening sequence, with that flashing pattern, was pretty much instant death for any codec on Dystopia.  For Himawari, she wasn't even breathing hard, and I got to remember why, for the first six episodes anyway, why it was one of my favorite series.

I was in love with Ryoko, at first. She was like Lum, with an edge. and I particularly liked the history she had with Tenchi before he was even aware of her - that was a sweet backstory.  Of course, after the big storyline in the first six episodes, they fell back on fairly standard Harem tripe, and that dimmed my enthusiasm, but still, I haven't seen it since I was eagerly buying it up on VHS.  And I've always loved that opening theme.

1 "Himawari has been making me very happy. Playing a time consuming game with all the graphic features ON instead of off" made me think you meant playing a game named Himawari. Completely forgot about that hostname thing.

2 Yeah, it's probably not credible to misinterpret that as say, a girlfriend named Himawari....
I'll go somewhere and cut myself now....

3 Since you mentioned VHS, is the legend true? I mean that the Geneon made six-month pause right after , producing the mother of all cliff-hangers.

4 Frankly, I can't remember.

5 I can't help but smile when I see Hiawari's name.  The way she would run in the intro to Vivdred Operation was so absurd...

And Tenchi Muyo was the second anime I ever watched... the first being Bubblegum Crisis.  A friend had it on Laserdisc and showed them to me.  I later bought the OVAs on Laserdisc, despite not having a player.  I think they're still out in the garage.

6 The only other place I've seen that goofy, arms-down run is Hank Venture in the opening of "The Venture Brothers."

Tenchi Muyo still holds up, at least the first 6.  But I can't sit through the embarrassment of Episode 7 and Ryoko trying to pick up on Tenchi with something she learned from a girls manga Sasami gave her.

The TV series wasn't as strong, and really diluted Ryoko's connection to Tenchi.  And Tenchi in Tokyo was bought through force of habit.

I think that level of investment entitled me to the torrent of GXP I just pulled down, although halfway through episode 1, there's no trace of the original cast but an empty house.

7 I watched some kind of continuation for OVA (not TV continuity) with a pile-up of sisters. It was pretty lulzy with all the justification, and also But it also reminded that the OVA was running out of steam after the 6 episodes.

8 Maybe Tenchi in Tokyo?  He goes off to college and meets a nice Earth girl, and Washuu constructs a hyperspace tunnel from the house to his bed, IIRC, and they all pester the crap out of him.  Might have involved some extra-dimensional loli girl screwing with things too.

GXP so far sucks.  Ryoko made a brief cameo in the first episode, but the whole show focuses on a new boy with absurdly phenomenal bad luck who somehow gets inducted into the Galaxy Police aboard a Transport ship.  He is irritating the way he just smiles through shit happening to him.

It's almost like a fan-fic someone set in the Tenchi universe where they had to avoid using the original cast.  A BAD fan-fic.

9 This may be of some.....interest.

10 Ah, I'll have to put that in the proper thread.  Thanks!

11 GXP is an entirely independent storyline that has nothing to do with Tenchi but the name and a lot of secondary characters.   (The originals show up for one episode.)  Nabeshin did the series, and he did an outstanding job of it -- even if he did give the creators some continuity headaches.  IMHO, it's actually better than TM itself, because it was done as a single series, all at once, and hangs together very well.

It's certainly better than that execrable OVA series about Tenchi's half-brother.

12 I thought it was pretty awful.  Although I did like the character designs for Elma and Ryoko.  It strained credibility for them to back-continuity have Ryoko BE Elma.  And doubling the size of the harem in the last episode was the crowning moment of stupid writing.

I guess what I'd like to see in a Harem is one where the center of it all is an ACTIVE element, rather than a beach ball being batted around by all these girls with inexplicable devotion to him.
