I must be doing something right

After a LONG absence, I'm attracting spammers again.  Annoyingly, there's one Japanese one who has figured out the formula well enough to come in at a 4.5 on the spam-o-meter so his posts actually show up.

Until I delete them.

In the Queue: Accel World. I decided to pick it up because of an AMV. Yeah, I know I hate Arena combat, but something about the interaction with the pudgy, loser main character and the school princess makes me want to find out what's going on.

Two episodes in though and I'm seeing one flaw with the design.  New users of the Brain Burst program get 100 points. Every time they enter it they lose one, and every time they lose a fight, they lose 10 (or win 10 if they win). There may be a greater prize if they beat a higher level player, as unlikely as that is. If they're wiped out, they're locked out of ever using it again.  So it's kinda like AmWay, to get anywhere you have to keep bringing new people in and wipe them out. Thus it CAN'T be such a secret society like they're making it out to be, and their count must be off.  Especially since other players seem to enter the burst mode just to watch the fights.

Update: Okay, Spectating doesn't count, but still, the point economy only has transfers and losses, so the only way to add to the economy is new members.

1 Had to lock the Dream Eater Merry post, that's the one that was getting all the spam.

2 Couple things I've heard get mentioned about the LN, I've not heard about the Anime.

One, being kicked out of the game due to point loss edits out memories of playing the game.  Thus secrecy and weight.

Two, at level four or something, one can burst into the PvE environment, which is also a place to get points.

3 Yeah, that got discussed in the comments of another post about this show (I guess my blog got a little disorganized there for a bit). But it still screams that there's a depopulation spiral when each player can only bring in one additional player. Each player-kill that happens before a player can bring in another reduces the number of active lines of entry into the game.  I suppose one license could still bring in a lot of players if they recruited serially like mad, but in the end, it's still only one recruit per user. How many original licenses were there, I wonder, and how many are left?

4 The novels talk about the size of the initial population, and the size and stability of the current population, giving specific numbers.

I assume the unknown party behind the game has their thumb on the scales so that they have enough subjects to research.

If one thinks about it, what we already know about the brain burst program suggests that the people behind it have already significantly compromised the security on the interface devices. If they have also compromised the supply chain for the interface devices, they could hide the program on ones being sold to children, and remotely delete or activate it as they saw fit.

It bugs me that the unknown developers are probably operating out of Japan, and that something like thousands of years are supposed to have passed in game. It seems like even a brute force investigation of Japan's real estate, finances and people might've found something by now. That said, this may be something less likely to occur to a bunch of kids than the approaches of the good guys and bad guys.

It might be a pretty productive way to abuse the game. I like studying and hate cheating and twitchy stuff (day trading for example), so that may be personal preference. An analyst who knew much of what was going on in a place, and could tell if a place was fully as productive as it could be might legitimately make a lot of money, even if studying on one's own in fast time is a poor way to learn leadership and management.
